Indications/Uses
Variety of conditions requiring anti-inflammatory activity eg, RA, OA (arthrosis, degenerative joint disease), ankylosing spondylitis, acute musculoskeletal disorders & acute gout.
Dosage/Direction for Use
RA, OA (arthrosis, degenerative joint disease), ankylosing spondylitis 20 mg as a single daily dose. A relatively small group of patients may be maintained on 10 mg daily. Some patients may require up to 30 mg daily given in single or divided doses. Acute gout Initially single dose of 40 mg, followed by another 40 mg on the next 4-6 days in single or divided doses. Acute musculoskeletal disorders Initially 40 mg daily for 1st 2 days in single or divided doses. For the remainder of 7-14 day treatment period, reduce dose to 20 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Place on the tongue to disperse, then swallow.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of GI ulceration, bleeding or perforation. Active peptic ulceration or history of recurrent ulceration. Cross-sensitivity to ASA or NSAIDs. Treatment of peri-op pain in the setting of CABG surgery. Severe heart failure. Severe renal & hepatic failure.
Special Precautions
Not for long-term management of gout. History of GI disease. W/draw if PUD, perforation or GI bleeding occurs. CHF, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, overt renal disease. Interstitial nephritis, glomerulitis, papillary necrosis. Ophth evaluation for patients w/ visual complaints. Phenylketonuria. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Stomatitis, anorexia, epigastric distress, nausea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, flatulence, diarrhea, abdominal pain & indigestion. GI bleeding, perforation & ulceration. Swollen eyes, blurred vision & eye irritations. Rash & pruritus. Reversible elevations of BUN & creatinine. Decrease in Hb & hematocrit. Anemia. Thrombocytopenia, nonthrombocytopenic purpura (Henoch-Schoenlein), leucopenia & eosinophilia.
Drug Interactions
Diuretic agents. Oral anticoagulants. ASA or concomitant use of 2 NSAIDs. Highly protein-bound drugs. Cimetidine increases AUC.
